Where your bank shows your IBAN

Your IBAN shows up in a few places that virtually every bank provides. One of these is usually enough:

• Bank statement: your IBAN appears at the top of every statement, right next to the account holder's name and BIC.
• Bank card: many banks now print the IBAN directly on the back of the card.
• Online banking and app: in your account overview, the IBAN can usually be copied with a single tap.
• Account opening documents: the original paperwork from opening your account lists the IBAN as well.

Calculating and checking your IBAN online

An IBAN calculator comes in handy when you don't have the number on hand, or when you want to check an existing IBAN before sending a transfer. The tool works out the IBAN from a bank code and account number, or checks whether an entered IBAN is valid based on its check digits.

Does your IBAN ever change?

Your IBAN usually stays the same for as long as you keep the account. It only changes if you switch banks or if two banks merge. In either case, your bank lets you know in advance so everyone you deal with gets the new IBAN in time.

Is it safe to share your IBAN?

Yes. Nobody can withdraw money from an account with the IBAN alone — it only identifies the account for a transfer. A direct debit would still need a separate mandate that the account holder authorizes explicitly.
