Visa and Mastercard Suspended in Cuba: Can You Still Send Money?

Visa and Mastercard Suspended in Cuba: Can You Still Send Money?

As of June 8, 2026

A headline is causing concern: Visa and Mastercard have been suspended in Cuba since June 6, 2026. Many read this as Cuba being financially cut off. That's not quite accurate — and with Fonmoney you can still send money to your family.

What was actually suspended

The Cuban Central Bank discontinued processing of Visa and Mastercard transactions as of June 6, 2026. The foreign bank partner that handled these card payments on the Cuban side ended the cooperation after the U.S. Executive Order of May.

Affected: payments with foreign Visa and Mastercard cards inside Cuba — for example travelers paying at hotels or stores, or trying to withdraw cash at ATMs.

Your money transfer isn't affected

A money transfer from abroad is something different from a card payment on the ground in Cuba. Headlines often conflate the two.
  • Cash delivery doesn't run through the card system in Cuba. Your family receives physical cash.
  • Bank transfer goes to an account at a Cuban bank, not via card processing.
  • Cubacel top-up still works online: you add credit to your relatives' phones directly.

All three paths work independently of the card suspension.

At Fonmoney you still pay by card

On your side — when paying for your transfer — Fonmoney still accepts Visa and Mastercard. The suspension affects card payments inside Cuba, not your payment for the transfer from outside.

How you send with Fonmoney

Fonmoney processes money transfers to Cuba via cash delivery, bank transfer, and Cubacel. All three options are unaffected by the Visa/Mastercard suspension. The final amount you see from the start.

Bottom line

The card suspension affects payments inside the country, not your transfer to your family. Those sending through cash delivery, bank transfer, or Cubacel continue as before. There's no reason to halt a planned transfer.
