How a Venezuelan account number is structured

A Venezuelan bank account has 20 digits. The first four form the bank code (Código bancario) and identify the bank – similar to a routing number.

  • Bank code (4 digits) – e.g. 0102 for Banco de Venezuela, 0105 for Mercantil, 0108 for BBVA Provincial.
  • Branch code (4 digits) – the branch office.
  • Account type (2 digits) – e.g. 01 for a current account, 03 for a savings account.
  • Account number (10 digits) – the individual number.

Recipients also usually provide their Cédula de Identidad (Venezuelan national ID number). Venezuelans living abroad may supply their passport number instead.

Pago Móvil: mobile payments in Venezuela

In Venezuela, Pago Móvil is the most widely used payment method – real-time transfers via mobile phone, supported by nearly all banks. The recipient only needs an active bank account and a phone number to receive and manage money instantly. You send the funds to the bank account; the recipient handles the rest via Pago Móvil.

What recipient details do you need?

  • Full name of the recipient – exactly as it appears on the Cédula, including accents.
  • Cédula de Identidad or passport number.
  • 20-digit account number including the bank code.
  • Bank name – and the bank must be active.
  • Phone number of the recipient (optional, for notifications).

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Enter the name exactly: even a single incorrect character can cause the transfer to be returned.
  • Only choose active banks: accounts at closed banks no longer receive credits.
  • Check the exchange rate: the bolívar fluctuates frequently. Fonmoney shows the rate transparently before you confirm payment.

Banks that are no longer active

Some banks have been closed or merged. Do not use these accounts:

  • Banco Occidental de Descuento (BOD): closed in 2022 by the banking regulator Sudeban; accounts were migrated to Banco Nacional de Crédito (BNC).
  • Banco Industrial de Venezuela (BIV): liquidated, no longer operating.

If in doubt, ask your family whether the account is still active.

Currency: the bolívar (VES)

The national currency is the bolívar digital (VES). The exchange rate changes constantly; fixed-rate promises are unreliable. With Fonmoney, before every transfer to Venezuela you can see the current rate and the exact amount the recipient will receive.
