Which networks you can top up
Vietnam has four network operators that you can top up with Fonmoney. Viettel is by far the largest. It is followed by MobiFone and VinaPhone, which are also state-owned. Vietnamobile is the only private operator and much smaller.
Which number belongs to which network
Vietnamese mobile numbers have ten digits and start with 0. The first three digits usually show the provider: Viettel uses 086, 096, 097, 098 and 032–039, VinaPhone 088, 091, 094 and 081–085, MobiFone 089, 090, 093, 070 and 076–079, Vietnamobile 052, 056, 058 and 092. Someone who kept their number may have a different prefix.
Old eleven-digit numbers
Until 2018, Vietnam had eleven-digit mobile numbers, for example starting with 016 or 012. Since then, all numbers have ten digits. If your family still has an old number written down, ask for the current one.
How long a top-up takes
Once your payment is confirmed, the credit goes to the provider. It is usually on the phone within a few minutes, and the recipient doesn't need to do anything. They can check their balance with *101#, which works with all four operators.
